Obama and Hillary waffle on GLBT issues

Interesting to watch both Obama and Hillary waffle seriously on GLBT issues. I think this opens up a major gap for Edwards. Especially given Edwards’ strategy to be the liberal grassroots candidate.

Read all the way to the bottom though, then it gets interesting. Newsday’s Glenn Thrush quotes a ‘gay democrat’ about how difficult it is to appeal to religious Americans AND progressive Americans at the same time.

Steve Sanders, a gay Democrat who sat on the party’s platform committee in 2000, said Clinton and Obama are engaged in a delicate balancing act. “Hillary and Barack have made very public overtures to religious Americans. They are trying to figure out how progressive Democrats can also make appeals to Americans of faith. It’s a work in progress.”

But, being a religious American doesn’t mean you’re against gay marriage. He’s talking about religious Black Americans, who vote in Democratic primaries. Interesting Obama is willing to compromise on values he seems to hold about GLBT equality to cater to the Black vote. I thought he’d be running from it, given how much the media has reported his difficulty being ‘black enough.’ Hillary’s waffling is expected.

Wikipedia running out of cash?

I find this really hard to believe, but haven’t seen anything to the contrary. You should match my $25 donation. Wikipedia means free knowledge for everyone with an internet connection. It is a game changer. And it needs our support.

Southern hospitality

I must be feeling goofy tonight. Or at least StumbleUpon is. Two jokes in a row! I’m on a roll…

If there are Southerners out there, I’ll laugh just as hard at something you find coming after us Northeastern, lilly-livered, tofu-ice-cream-eating, metro-sexual sum-bitches. That should make us even.

Star wars collectibles..on home shopping network.

No matter what percentage of the American public goes online to consume their news and buy stuff, the Home Shopping Network will be relevant. Why? Because they sell shit like this. And this. AND THIS.

I’m watching this live on the Home Shopping Network now. I’m going to be trolling YouTube for this clip the next couple of days. WOW. If I can figure out how to pull the video myself, I will.

Cool project a friend is working on…

Check it out – it’s an essay contest to promote awareness of the importance of the Supreme Court cases that will consider what efforts local school systems take to promote diverse schools and avoid racial segregation. You should also check out the National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights website.

My day job

I wanted readers to know that I also maintain American Sexuality Magazine’s blog for my current job. I’m the web manager at the National Sexuality Resource Center. I’ll occasionally plug my work that I do during the day, but sparingly, of course. I need a nightlife, for godsakes.

We’ve been running a petition in support of Steve Stanton, a former City Manager who was fired because he came out as a transexual, and readers here should sign it. It’s a real shame that there are ZERO protections for transsexuals in the workplace in many right-ward leaning states, Florida included. I think its likely that GLBT organizations will be backing a serious legal challenge to that law, with Stanton as our postergirl. ;)

Horseraces are fun

From Political Wire:

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has gained three points on Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) over the past week, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll. However, Clinton still leads by eight points, 34% to 26%, while former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) takes 15%.

I don’t think that these polls means too much so far out, but its nice to see some movement. Remember, a little less than a year until anyone actually votes!

Tracking the right’s ‘I hate them more’ contest

Or, in other words, the Republican primary for President. Another gem, this one from Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.):

“I have been called — my kids are all aware of this — dumb, crazy man, science abuser, Holocaust denier, villain of the month, hate-filled, warmonger, Neanderthal, Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun,” he announced. “And I can just tell you that I wear some of those titles proudly.”

Americans lack ‘religious literacy’

I like this concept very much. It’s coined by Boston University Professor Steve Prothero, and will be the title of his upcoming book. The public intellectual strikes again!

Ann Coulter and Mitt Romney love each other

At least, that’s what Mitt wants people to hear. It makes sense strategically — if you have trouble appeasing the far-right, get one of their darlings to endorse you at a big-time media event. Unfortunately, Coulter flew off the handle, as she does a fair amount. Watch the video for the punchline. Ugh.

Watching Republican presidential candidates fight over who hates gays and liberals the most makes me sick.
